Between the forces of Lucifer and Ahriman stands Michael, holding the balance for the human soul —study from Michaelmas and the Soul-Forces of Man In the turning of the year, when shadows lengthen and the soul is asked to awaken (during Michaelmas) we find ourself drawn toward two forces. On one side, Lucifer tempts us upward—towards pride and illusions (escaping through imagination). On the other side, Ahriman draws us downward—toward denial and materialism (collapsing the will). But it is our conscious recognition, joined with courage, that provides the first step in overcoming these forces so that we are not over powered by them. For it is only blindness of these forces that makes the soul weak. The human task is not to deny these two forces, but to walk the narrow path between them—in balance. This is because the very act of recognizing the dragon with in ourselves gives us the possibility to transform them. Darkness, when met with courage and conscious thought, becomes a source of growth. However, today, many refuse to recognize the reality of this invisible dragon–cutting themselves off from the very source of strength that could sustain them. In this way, denial (or even spiritual bypassing) does not free us from the dragon but it delivers us more deeply into its grasp. This is because the dragon is not subdued by dismissal, but by exposure. And if we allow our thought to remain bound only to the physical world, it grows cold and dead. When this happens, the soul loses its strength and the dragon gains its dominion. It is only when thought is enlivened that it becomes light-bearing—a sword guided in courage and clear action. Today, the dragon especially manifest in intellectual life—in a cleverness that denies the invisible forces of the world—in science cut off from morality and in thought emptied from reverence. However, the goal is not to suppress this intellectualism but to ennoble it, allowing it to hold its strength, light and freedom. This path is not easy. To live between Lucifer and Ahriman is to live in tension, always tempted to escape into one or collapse in the other. Yet it is in this very tension that makes us human. For in choosing this balance, we awaken the forces of the human soul—the strength to walk upright and to carry spirit and matter—both heaven and earth. In this sense, Michaelmas is more than a seasonal marker, it is a call to action. Steiner warns that if we reduce this festival to outward symbols and aesthetic pageantry, it looses its power. Festivals are not meant to be only a commemoration of the past, but are meant to be carried forward as living forces within the human being. And each persons inner battle contributes to the destiny of the world. Michaelmas, then, is a festival of courage and living in balance. It calls us to walk the narrow path with clarity and to resist the extremes that seek to sway us. This season asks us to find the steady strength of the heart. For it is only in this inner balance that the human soul becomes free. Don't forget to check out my new book: What Happened on Michaelmas Day Read from other blog post below.
