Children must be taught how to think, rather than what to think. —study from Practical Advice to Teachers In these words, I heard the same impulse: education is not about filling children with second-hand thoughts. It is about awakening what already lives in them—the seed of imagination, truth, beauty, and responsibility. When we teach children what to think, we hand them conclusions, but deny them the wonder and the joy of discovery. We risk making them repeaters of others—copying—rather than a seeker of truth. But when we teach them how to think, we guide them to questions, to wonder, and even to discernment. We strengthen their inner life so they can meet the world freely, forming thoughts that are truly their own. In the practice of Waldorf education (aka Steiner education), the path unfolds naturally with the child's individual development. In early years, this work is cultivated through living experiences. In middle years, it is grown through story, art, and imagination—carrying knowledge though symbols and pictures. In adolescence, it lives through reflection and critical questioning, as the capacity for independent thought awakens. Steiner's vision was not to educate to conformity, but an education of freedom—nurturing the whole human being: thinking, feeling, and willing. We are to become gardeners, tending the soil, giving light and nourishment, and then trusting the seed within each child to grow into its own form—rather than sculpting the child into a fixed form. Perhaps this is why Steiner reminds us that the true task of education is to help the growing child bring what lives in them into full consciousness. For in teaching the child how to think, we are educating more than the mind, but we are awakening truth, beauty, and goodness into the world. ANDWatch this video on the Integration of the Arts.
