Steiner once said that our intellect can only grasp what is dying, but our will—through our senses—grasps the living. --study from The Study of Man When I first heard this, it was as if a curtain drew back—revealing something I had forgotten. The intellect is sharp and precise, but it moves among shadows. It shows us what has already become. It is like studying the skeleton of a bird: we may understand its structure, but we will never hear its song in flight. The will, however, lives differently. It breathes through the senses, through the simple act of seeing, hearing, moving, touching. Here, life is still streaming. The flower still gifts us with fragrance. The sun continuously gives the gift of warmth felt against the skin. In willing, we do not merely observe—we participate. Perhaps this is why Steiner urged us to awaken our will. For the will draws us into what is still becoming, into the living conversation between ourselves and the world. It is here, beyond the dry clarity of intellect alone, that truth begins to live. This is how I want to move forward in my study here. Rather than gathering what is dead, I want to begin stepping into what breathes. This way of studying is more than collecting final answers. To study, in this sense, is to listen for the living question—wonder. For when our will meets the world through the senses, even our thinking can be reborn—no longer as a shadow of what has passed, but as a light alive in the present moment.
