The human being is born with forces that are first needed to shape the body. Later, these same forces are freed, and can be used into the soul. —study from The Soul Economy It's here that I first began to understand early childhood in a new way. The energy that builds little bones, teeth, and organs in the early years does not disappear when its work is finished. It is released—lifted from the hidden work of shaping the body into the work of shaping the soul. These are the same forces that later become imagination, memory, creativity, and the power to will. This is why we are asked to focus on the "whole being" in early childhood: the hands, head, and heart. They work together as they fill the young child's whole being with movement and images—rather than the concrete thinking. And by the end of this stage, the child's thinking awakens and (if nurtured well) it should blossom into original questions grounded in clear thought. This is why Steiner places such importance on guiding these freed forces "into activity." If they are not awakened through meaningful work, such as the handcraft, they risk withering into passivity. But when a child creates a habit of forming something meaningful with their hands, they are learning to guide their own inner forces with freedom. Through this process, both the material world of the child and inner world are transformed. What begins as matter becomes form; what begins in the child becomes dignity. In the language of the alchemist, what was once hidden in the body becomes transmuted into gold within the soul. And here is where the alchemy of handwork takes place. For what begins as raw material—fleece, wood, or clay—becomes something earned through the child's effort. Loose fibers transform into felt, pieces of wood reveal a carved form, and thread becomes cloth. But the deeper alchemy is within: the child who once poured the gift of this formative energy into building a tooth, and now pours that same energy into the work of hands, earning inner qualities such as patience and perseverance. Perhaps the handcraft is the true alchemy of education: that in every act of handwork, the child transforms the world around them, and in doing so, transforms themselves.
