To understand the festivals rightly, we must learn again to read the language of symbols, for in them the soul of humanity speaks. —study from Signs & Symbols of the Christmas Festival Stones / Mineral Kingdom The first light of advent is the light of stones-- the light that lives in crystals, seashells, and bones. The first candle glows for the stones, and suddenly the whole world feels steady beneath our feet. In this realm of crystals, shells, and bones, we are reminded of the firm foundation and lawfulness on which everything stands. This earth element calls us to steadiness, to grounding, and to the joy of simply existing. In their weight we sense our own need for rest and for roots that hold us steady amid the turning world. They show us a world before motion. Yet, like a chorus, these minerals hum with strength and endurance. They sing, “You can build here.” Just as the Earth herself holds us, our own physical body gives us a place to stand, stretch, and play in the holiday season. In anthroposophy, the mineral realm is the bearer of form. It holds memory of divine order within matter itself. This material body belongs to the world. Inwardly, the discipline of clear thinking opens a quiet space within. Our thoughts find order, and the chaos of the season transforms to wonder. So, as the first light flickers, let it be a reminder that even the humblest stone is a part of the greater law of the universe, and that clarity of thought is a gift that steadies us all. Traditions Families can mark this week with small gestures, honoring the steadfast nature of the mineral kingdom by collecting crystals, shells, or rocks and placing them around the Advent wreath. Children love searching for smooth pebbles or tiny geodes on a nature walk. Each treasure becomes part of the season’s table. Some families build a cairn of stones—a tower of gratitude—echoing the way travelers once raised cairns as waymarkers. They place each stone with intention, light a candle, and whisper a wish for steadiness in the week ahead. Snacks and Meals: salty snacks, rock candy, root vegetables, and warm meals sprinkled with sea salt (and seafood) Craft Projects: salt dough, clay impressions, salt crystal ornaments, geode or crystal ornaments, stone spirals, and pocket stones Purpose: to help the child sense the reliability and steadfastness of the earth—the first foundation upon which all life stands ANDThis is from my book: The Book of Midwinter Light Read from other blog post below.
