To understand the festivals rightly, we must learn again to read the language of symbols, for in them the soul of humanity speaks. —study from Signs & Symbols of the Christmas Festival Quintessence / Humankind The fourth light of advent, is the light of man-- born with great love, that we seeks to understand The fourth candle shines for the human being. In its glow, we sense a mystery awakening within us. The firmness of the minerals becomes the structure of our bones. The growth of the plants breathes in our life rhythms. The instincts of the beasts awaken our own inner life of soul. And yet, within this woven harmony of creation, a light arises that belongs to no other kingdom. The element of fire dances here—it illuminates and gives itself away through warmth. In this fire lives the mystery of consciousness itself—light becomes love, warmth becomes will, and the flame becomes aware of its own burning. In us burns the spark of the “I”, the self that can love freely and act from inner purpose. It is born of spirit, and it seeks to transform the world through the light of understanding and the warmth of love. In anthroposophy, this divine light becomes conscious of itself within the human being—it is a love that knows itself. This is when our I-organization gathers the physical, etheric, and astral bodies into harmony, shaping them into the living instrument of the human being. In the head it awakens clarity. In the heart it awakens love. And in the hands it awakens the will—our purpose founded in good deed. It is through this threefold expression that the human being bridges heaven and the Earth—becoming a bearer of light and a vessel of love. So, as the fourth candle glows, may we remember that being human is not about being perfect, but about striving—to understand, to serve, and to kindle warmth in the darkest night. This is the gift mankind brings to this season: to receive the world's wonder and return to it, transformed, as light for one another. Traditions The last week of Advent is often marked by acts of kindness and giving. As the fourth candle is lit, its flame reflects the awakening of love within the human heart. Families may sing together by candlelight, prepare gifts for one another, or give alms to those in need. Communal singing and storytelling are especially powerful now—they weave voices together into one harmony, reflecting the true meaning of humanity: connection and compassion. Snacks and Meals: potluck, breads, cheeseball, lingonberry cheese bite, pickled carrots or beets, porkkanalaatikko, rodkal, mashed potatoes with parsnips, barley stew, gravlax, julelaks, pinnekjøtt, kransekake, lebkuchen, stollen, and berry cobbler Craft Projects: bake gifts, knit gifts, sew gifts such as ancestral dolls, felt heart brooches, write short poems, sing simple songs, watercolor little lanterns, tell reflective stories, and perform puppet shows Purpose: to awaken the child to the sense of the human being as a bearer of divine light—love made visible through action ANDThis is from my book: The Book of Midwinter Light Read from other blog post below.
