The Life of the Lesson

All teaching must be permeated with art.  —study from The Study of Man
When I first read this, I realized that education is more than just a set of skills to be developed, but it is an experience to be created (and lived). Steiner is not simply suggesting that we add painting or music as extra subjects. He is pointing to something much deeper: that art itself is the lifeblood of learning.
If we teach only to the intellect, we give the child what is already dead—shadows of knowledge or a form without a song. But when art breathes into the lesson, thinking becomes alive (as a living experience). A story gives warmth to history. A drawing shapes mathematics into form. A song carries language into memory. Art was never meant to decorate knowledge—it was meant to awaken it (and provide a means to experience it or live with it).

Young children already live in pictures, in rhythms, and in beauty. Their feelings dream, their will sleeps, and their thinking is only beginning to stir. To meet them in this state of becoming, we must present art as a living language that reaches into their own understanding. Through art, thinking becomes imaginal, feeling becomes purified, and will is guided without force.

Perhaps this is why Steiner emphasized that every lesson, no matter the subject, should be touched by artistry. Because in teaching, art carries a living experience. To educate through art is to educate in harmony with the child's soul which longs not only to know and understand the world, but to love it.

Teachers must strive to awaken their own artistic abilities; to weave color, story, music, and movement into each lesson. For only when teaching becomes an art does education become what it is meant to be be—a living experience (a creation of its own).
