The Riddle of the Human Being

Steiner often hinted that the human being is formed of questions, not answers. To be human is to stand and wonder.  —study from The Study of Man
Although this concept isn't directly stated, I found it weaving between words. We so often long for fixed definitions, for clear solutions, for something final and complete. Yet, Steiner reminds us: the essence of the human being is constantly changing and evolving. Each of us—like a riddle unfolding. And yet, if we try to answer too quickly, we find ourselves grasping at a shadow—missing the light behind it. Only when we allow ourselves to remain open to possibilities (wonder) does light and wisdom shine through.

​In childhood, this shows more clearly. Every question asked is a stage of growth: Who will I become? What lives in me that is still hidden? And each stage of growth becomes a new chapter of questions. At seven, at fourteen, at twenty-one, the question evolves. It deepens and transforms—waiting to be lived.

Perhaps this is why Steiner urged teachers (and parents) to meet the child with reverence. For if we see the human being as a living question, we are meeting the mystery—rather than rushing to concluding it. In this way, teaching becomes less about imposing a certainty, and more about protecting the sacred space of self-discovery and wonder. For in every ending conclusion, there is a seed of a new beginning.

And what about ourselves? Even as adults, we are not finished. Each choice and each threshold asks us again and again: Who am I? And we can answer: the human being IS a person of becoming. And only life itself can continue to answer this question.
