To understand the festivals rightly, we must learn again to read the language of symbols, for in them the soul of humanity speaks. —study from Signs & Symbols of the Christmas Festival Flora / Plant Kingdom The second light of advent lives in the light of plants-- that reach up to the sun, and in the breezes dance. The second candle glimmers for plants, and suddenly the room feels green and alive. In every pine needle and holly sprig there is a picture of hope: a life that reaches towards the light. It is the plant realm that reminds us of the mystery of becoming—of how growth never rushes but unfolds in faith. As each stem bends between earth and sky, we begin to understand that all true growth begins in surrender and ends in light. The element of water flows here, carrying renewal and the pulse of life that awakens in all growing things. This element draws roots deep and leaves high. Just as the plants draw in the light and give forth breath, so does our own life force—each day renewing us. In anthroposophy, this life body, also known as the etheric body, allows the soul to experience rhythm, growth, and renewal. This body contains the life-force that carries memory and sensational experiences—urging us to rise each morning and begin again. The soul's task is to manage these feelings and sensations by learning to balance both sympathy and antipathy. This allows emotions to breathe—expanding and contracting like the leaves that open to the Sun and close to the night. So, as the second light glimmers, let us remember that life too unfolds in faith and each green shoot is a promise of light returning. Traditions Families can celebrate the plant kingdom with gestures of greening and growing. Some may bring evergreen branches indoors during this week, filling the home with the fresh scent of pine, cedar, or holly. Others sprout wheatgrass or lentils in small bowls of soil, watching new shoots rise during Advent as a living sign of light returning to the earth. Children delight in tending these growing greens—watering the sprouts, breathing in their scent, and watching the living world awaken indoors. When ivy is woven into the Advent wreath, or mistletoe hung above the door, we are reminded that even in the coldest season, the living spirit of nature persists. Snacks and Meals: seeds, nuts, herbal teas, spiced cider, pumpkin pie, fruit cake, spicy mushroom soup, corn chowder, potato soup, beetroot salad, and winter green salad Craft Projects: plant beans in an advent garden, press leaves, fill sachets with dried herbs, string garlands, string dried cranberries or dried oranges, add pine cones to the hearth, and create cinnamon stars Purpose: to help the child recognize the miracle of growth, both in nature and in themselves ANDThis is from my book: The Book of Midwinter Light Read from other blog post below.
