What Sleeps in Me, Wakes in You

At first, this may sound daunting. Shouldn't the teacher be prepared and already know—holding the answers? But Steiner's picture is different. He shows us that teaching is not the transfer of knowledge from someone who "has" to someone who "lacks." Teaching is rather a meeting of two journeys: the becoming of the child, and the becoming of the one guiding them.

The teacher is not finished developing themselves. In fact, to stand before children with this reverence depends on the teacher's own willingness to keep growing themselves—to continue asking questions and wondering. Because children do not only hear what the teacher says (and what they know), but they imitate who they are. If the children see a striving, they will take this gesture into themselves more deeply than any lesson.

​If the teacher offers a lesson out of what is already fixed, then they only offer shadows of what has been. But when they teach out of what is alive within themselves (the wonder they are living with) then the lesson becomes much more than repeated information. It becomes development.

Perhaps this is why Steiner urged teachers to cultivate inner work: meditation and self-reflection. Not for their own sake alone, but so that the teacher might model this awareness in the presence of the child.

​Each day before a lesson, they must remember: the human being is a living question. To teach, then, is to learn. So then, a teacher must first learn to awaken in themselves what they hope to awaken in another.
