In early childhood, what the child sees and hears becomes the shaping substance of their very being. Everything surrounding the child flows into the growing body and soul. —study from The Education of the Child in Light of Anthroposophy It's here that I realized the young child (between 0-7) is not meant to passively learn about the world, they are meant to become a part of it actively. This lived experience typically consists of natural activities—done by real people who bring clear purpose and meaning. And, for very young children, these sorts of experiences are best given through natural rhythm, warmth, movement, and stories (both oral and read aloud). Let's talk about the stories presented during the early years, particularly, the written literature we read aloud directly from books. If it is your goal to awaken the child's inner life naturally, then illustrated books are not always necessary. In fact, at this tender age too many visuals can overpower the child's own imagination. That's not to say that illustrated books should not be offered, but perhaps not expected. At this age, it’s best to find books that are vivid in language rather than illustrations. Or find gently illustrated books that use open-ended archetypal images (avoiding trademarked and over zealous artist or content creators). And if you find a book that holds the young child's attention without a single picture—you've found something truly beautiful—because you have made space for their own inner picture to arise. In the service of Waldorf, we resist the modern temptation to “wake up” the child’s thinking-life too early. Overstimulating media, flashy books, and overly busy activities often short circuit the very capacities that we hope to nourish. So, instead, we protect those early years (the child's inner kingdom) where freedom in their feeling, imagining, and dreaming are safeguarded. And from here, we trust that thinking will arrive, later, not as something imposed but a light that turns on from within. This is the miracle we witness: where wonder is protected first… and later, it ripens into wisdom. Perhaps this is why Steiner reminds us that education is an act of incarnation and needs very little formal instruction. For before intellectual thought awakens, the soul lives in inner pictures and feelings—absorbing the world through the sensory impressions that become the very foundation of thinking later on. And yes, when the child is given space to grow inwardly, truth does not need to be forced. It will naturally emerge like a seed reaching toward the sun.
